In Kochi, following the directive from the state human rights commission, the government has instructed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to a complainant named Sojish from Nettoor. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued the order, stating that the compensation would be deducted from the salary of the former SI of Panangad in three equal payments. The chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, had mandated the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was physically assaulted by the former Panangad SI Vipin AB. The incident occurred when a police team, under the former SI's leadership, took Sojish into custody without proper authorization after he had been hospitalized. Sojish subsequently lodged a complaint with the commission, which ruled that a case should be brought against the SI and that compensation should be provided. Although a disciplinary action was taken against the SI with a reprimand following an investigation, no compensation was awarded. The government noted that the former SI had the opportunity to present a defense before the commission issued its final decision, but opted not to do so. Consequently, the government ordered a compensation of Rs 25,000 for the complainant Sojish.
